Third grade students at WCIS spent a week studying historical fiction while they read Pop’s Bridge. Through this lesson students were able to identify the characteristics of historical fiction.
Furthermore, a STEM activity was incorporated during this unit. The setting for Pop’s Bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Students learned about a few different types of bridges commonly built and the structures/components that make bridges strong. Students were then giving everyday items to construct their own bridges. The culminating activity was an experiment to see which bridge was the strongest.
