The Colonel Strings have begun another exciting year under the direction of Rob Powers, Whitley Central Primary teacher.  The group was organized by Joe Bailey in 2001 as an after school music club focusing on bluegrass and the traditional music of our area.  The intention of the group was to continue the musical traditions of the area with the students learning that genre of music and how to play the instruments used to create the unique sounds of bluegrass music.

The Colonel Strings band is comprised of students of the Whitley County School District, ranging in age from elementary to high school students.  Jim Harp, Penny Hill, Tyler Byrge, and Rebecca Moses, adult volunteers, devote many hours to practices and performances with the group, teaching and supporting the students.  The band had the honor last winter of playing at the Galt House in Louisville, KY for the Kentucky School Board Association.

The Strings are off to a busy start this year with weekly practices and performances scheduled at the WCHS home football games, Williamsburg's Old Fashioned Trading Days, Whitley County High School Parent's Night, and the Blazin' Bluegrass Festival in Pine Knot, Kentucky. They will also perform throughout the year at Cumberland Falls, area nursing homes, fundraisers, and throughout the district at schools and various activities.

We look forward to many hours of a good time being had by all.
