This past Saturday night, September 16, 2017, was the Whitley County Athletic Hall of Fame banquet for the inaugural class. It was a special night that brought some of the finest athletes to ever wear the Colonel uniform together along with their families, teammates, and coaches. There were 185 people in attendance to share in the accomplishments of these nine individuals and one team. This inaugural class was responsible for three State Championships, one State Record, three Region Championships, and over twenty District Championships.
Each of the Hall of Fame inductees had an opportunity to speak to the crowd and to thank parents, coaches, and others that helped them achieve so much during their days of playing sports at Whitley County High School. There were stories of backyard games with siblings, memorable practice and game moments, even a story of a loss in the Region Championship some 45 years ago that still haunts one of our inductees.
I would like to thank several people for their help in making this Hall of Fame banquet such a special night. A couple of community partners that helped make this event happen are First Baptist Church of Williamsburg and The University of the Cumberlands; the custodial staff at the High School, Bobby Gibbs, Susie Brashear, Larry Brown, Stuart Conlin, Bob Lawson, Al Ysidro, Rachele Rice, Amanda Croley and Krysti Conlin; and the Hall of Fame Committee Members for the hours they spent organizing this event from the nomination process up to the banquet.
